The Darvel Branch

Rails into the Irvine Valley.

Built by the Glasgow and South Western Railway, the line developed in stages from Kilmarnock to Galston, Newmilns and finally Darvel. In 1905 it became part of a jointly operated route towards Strathaven, although no train completed the full journey between Kilmarnock and Strathaven.

The railway companies alternated control of the Darvel–Strathaven section every six months. The eastern section closed in 1939, followed by the end of passenger services west of Darvel in 1964.

Photographs digitised from artefacts held by Darvel Museum at the Town Hall, with thanks to Frank Donnelly for his longstanding care of the collection.
