The Lang Toon

History runs through Darvel.

A planned weaving town became a world centre for lace. A farmer’s son became the discoverer of penicillin. And the hills around us hold stories older still.

    Battle of Loudoun Hill

    Robert the Bruce wins a defining victory beneath the hill.

  2. 1752
    Darvel takes shape

    The first twelve feus establish a new planned weaving settlement.

  3. 1840
    Connections beyond the valley

    Darvel connects with the outside world.

  4. 1873
    A town in its own right

    Darvel becomes a Police Burgh and develops a new civic identity.

  5. 1876
    Power comes to the loom

    Darvel’s first power-loom production begins.

  6. 1881
    Alexander Fleming is born

    A boy from Lochfield Farm will go on to transform medicine.
