The Lang Toon
History runs through Darvel.
A planned weaving town became a world centre for lace. A farmer’s son became the discoverer of penicillin. And the hills around us hold stories older still.
- 1307Battle of Loudoun Hill
Robert the Bruce wins a defining victory beneath the hill.
- 1752Darvel takes shape
The first twelve feus establish a new planned weaving settlement.
- 1840Connections beyond the valley
Darvel connects with the outside world.
- 1873A town in its own right
Darvel becomes a Police Burgh and develops a new civic identity.
- 1876Power comes to the loom
Darvel’s first power-loom production begins.
- 1881Alexander Fleming is born
